Home Business - How to get started with social media

There are many home business owners that might not even know about social media.  What is it anyway?  There are all kinds of sites online that are geared toward social interaction.

Social media applications like twitter, facebook and others are a place that you can go online and share information about yourself and your business.

How do you get involved in social media?  Go to the top social media sites and sign up.  When you sign up for a social media site, you will be given a social media profile.  This usually means setting up a username and a password that gives you access to an account.  Social media is all about being social and sharing information.  Once you get an account, you will need to fill out information about yourself.  They might ask you for your real name, birthday, and email address.  Once you get your initial profile information filled out you can start diving deeper into social networks.

Social apps are a great way to connect with some of your long lost friends and family members.  You can share information by writing text updates or you can post links to pictures or videos.  Most social networks will give you a place in your profile area to talk about your interests, relationships, and links to any websites that you consider important.

Twitter is a popular social application.  You can follow people and businesses through twitter with just the click of a button.  So if you were a home business owner, you could find all the products, services and news outlets that you enjoy and start following them.  As they post new information, it would pop up in your twitter stream.  With twitter, you can post information and get followers too.  So if you want to update people on what you had for breakfast, you could do it.  If you wanted to update your status bar with a picture of you at a conference, you could do it.

Social media applications can be an inexpensive way for home business owners to connect online.  Stay abreast of the latest news in your industry and share information about what is going on at your company.
